The Garden Railroad at The Strawberry Patch commemorates the historical Old Colony Railroad, which first came to Brewster at the end of the Civil War, when The Brewster General Store first opened. Our railroad covers 1000 square feet adjacent to the Gift Shop. The trains are housed on tracks inside the store and enter the garden from the side of the building. The Strawberry Patch Garden Railroad contains reproductions of many of the early buildings which were found along the Old Colony Railroad. Included is the Brewster General Store and Brewster Scoop, the Brewster Depot, the East Brewster Railroad Station, the Brewster Grist Mill, the old railroad switching tower at Bourne (which was torn down when the Cape Cod canal was built), Scargo Tower and the former Orleans Engine House. Scargo Tower, still located in Dennis, was built by two brothers on the highest point of land in the area. The 28-foot circular stone tower commands the best panoramic view from the mainland to Provincetown of anywhere on the Cape today. It is also worth a visit. The Grist Mill, built in 1873 on the foundations of a older mill, stands on the site of America’s first water-powered mill dating from 1663. It to can be visited today. The Brewster Depot was built around 1865 but torn down before World War II. The rail complex included a freight house, coal bin, grain store and windmill. The windmill went to Orleans upon the Depot’s demise. The Strawberry Patch Garden Railroad is open from late May to early October, weather permitting.
