Beatrice Alexander was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 9, 1895, the daughter of Maurice and Hannah Pepper Alexander. Her father owned and operated the first doll hospital in the United States. Growing up with dolls in her blood, Madame (Beatrice) Alexander started out in the 1920’s by creating an all cloth doll, one that was more realistic and held the warmth of a child’s body. In the 1930’s her Alexander Doll Company started making composition dolls, in addition to its line of cloth dolls. Their composition dolls were the highest quality dolls on the market at the time. In the years that followed the composition dolls gave way to hard plastic and then vinyl dolls. Along the way Madame Alexander Dolls became recognized by collectors for their beauty and their exquisite clothing. This tradition of quality remains today, which is one reason the Strawberry Patch is happy to carry Madame Alexander Dolls.
